A new Xbox is coming out later this year, that’s for sure. There is a big secrecy going on and almost nothing leaked, yet. After reading Youssef’s post on the new Xbox, I compiled a list of my thoughts about the upcoming product.

Note that, I don’t know what is the name or features going to be in the new Xbox, but I have a dream about how the new Xbox can move console gaming forward:

I will control the new Xbox online

Xbox SmartGlass is a great companion app developed for iOS, Android and Windows Phone. You can use it just like your controller. Unfortunately that works only if your Xbox is turned on at the moment.

Let’s say I will be at home in an hour and a friend suggested me an awesome video game. With the new SmartGlass I’d like to connect to Xbox Live and purchase the game. Meanwhile my Xbox wakes up and starts downloading.

(If it actually does not go to full sleep and listen for network, it can wake up to download the requested game.)

The new Xbox will boot fast

Like today’s laptops and tablets, it will maintain its state in memory or it will hibernate so that when I press the power button, I will find myself in the game.

This, I think, is a serious problem. There is no device left on the world it takes 2-3 minutes to start playing a game. iPad and Surface are lighting fast, your computer can wake up from sleeping fast, all devices are getting practical. On the other hand I still wait a few minutes to launch the game I am playing everyday.

The new Xbox will use Kinect better

Right now you only can wave your hand and use your voice to navigate in your Xbox Home Screen. I expect more apps using microphone and camera inputs of Kinect, like Skype for Xbox.

Even though Windows Phone gets the Skype updates after Android and iPhone, I’m pretty sure videochatting with friends on Kinect for Xbox would be fun –and if your Xbox does not sleep completely as I said before, you can get surprise Skype calls from friends!

The new Xbox will have apps

The old Xbox 360 has adopted metro design and tile concept years ago. Meanwhile, Microsoft has created a great platform to develop Windows 8 apps with both .NET and Javascript. It actually has apps like YouTube, Netflix, Internet Explorer.

Windows 8 development platform is already mature and stable, with possibly a better RAM and CPU upcoming in the new Xbox can make this possible. If this happens, hopefully they just don’t come up with a completely new platform and SDK and allow indie programmers to write apps for Xbox!

I ♥ my Xbox and will definitely buy one when it comes out!
